Leclerc Aims to Pressure Mercedes in Japan After Max Qualifying Effort

Charles Leclerc is set to start the Japanese Grand Prix from fourth position, aiming to challenge the Mercedes team in what promises to be an exciting race at Suzuka. Leclerc’s qualifying effort showcased his determination as he “pushed to the max” during Q3, despite a moment of oversteer that initially seemed detrimental.
Leclerc’s Qualifying Performance
The Monegasque driver expressed satisfaction with his lap, stating that the oversteer incident ultimately benefitted his overall time. “I actually gained a lot of lap time by carrying that amount of speed in that corner,” Leclerc remarked. He noted the challenge of optimizing the car’s system during qualifying, which led to lost time in the straights in sectors two and three.
Team Dynamics and Race Day Strategy
Leclerc will be competing against Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, as well as McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. He believes that a strong start is crucial for pressuring the Silver Arrows. “With a good start, we can maybe put them under a bit of pressure,” he stated. However, he also acknowledged the inherent pace advantage that Mercedes has demonstrated in recent races.
Leclerc’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, will start from sixth position behind McLaren’s Lando Norris. Hamilton is optimistic about his car’s setup but recognized issues with speed in the middle and last sectors of the circuit. “Part of it is power and deployment, which is quite important here,” he explained.
Potential Challenges Ahead
When questioned about his chances against the McLarens for a podium finish, Hamilton expressed uncertainty. “I think they’ve taken a step forward this weekend, so it’s going to be challenging,” he acknowledged. He stressed the importance of making a good start to stay competitive.
