Police Advised Nottingham Attack Victim’s Partner to ‘Get a Dog,’ Inquiry Reveals

In a recent inquiry regarding a Nottingham attack, crucial information has emerged about the court experience for the victim’s family. James Coates, the son of the attack victim, expressed his confusion during the sentencing of Valdo Calocane, who received a hospital order in January 2024.
Courtroom Confusion Reported
On the day of the sentencing, Coates noted that the judge’s language was complex and unfamiliar. He recalled, “The judge started giving out all these words that I wasn’t familiar with.” After the proceedings, he was left perplexed as attendees began to leave the courtroom.
Seeking clarity, Coates turned to the family liaison officer (FLO) for answers. He recounted, “I turned to the FLO and was like, ‘what’s going on?’ She was like, ‘we’re finished. He’s being sent to hospital.’” At that moment, Coates felt the weight of the situation, compounded by personal pressures.
Communication Challenges
Coates aimed for an explanation from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), but they had already departed. Subsequently, the family received letters that summarized the medical evidence and clarified the court’s ruling. More communications came from various sources, including:
- Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)
- Nottinghamshire Police
Coates shared his struggles balancing work commitments and family responsibilities. He stated, “At this point, I was working full-time. I’d only taken three weeks off for bereavement and felt under pressure to go back to work.” Despite preparing for his wedding, the sentencing discussions often felt overwhelming and difficult to grasp.
