Greater Montreal will welcome a significant addition to its transportation infrastructure with the opening of its new passenger terminal at the Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET) on June 15. Located in Longueuil, this terminal will serve as a vital connection for travelers on the South Shore, enhancing air travel capacity in the region.
New Passenger Terminal Features
The new terminal spans approximately 21,000 square meters and boasts modern amenities to streamline the travel experience. Key features include:
- Nine boarding bridges
- 28 check-in counters
- 10 self-service kiosks
- Two baggage carousels
- A waiting lounge with capacity for 900 seats
- Three passenger security checkpoints
These facilities are designed with efficiency in mind, aiming to reduce the time needed for travelers to move from the curbside to the boarding gates.
Airline Services
Initially, two airlines, Porter Airlines and Pascan Aviation, will operate from the new terminal. It is anticipated that the airport will see an increase in daily flights, projecting an additional 30 to 40 flights once the terminal opens.
Environmental Initiatives
The MET is committed to sustainability. The terminal is fully electric, and 95% of airport vehicles will also be electric. Moreover, glycol used for de-icing will be recycled to limit environmental impact.
Transportation and Accessibility
Strategically located about 15 kilometers from downtown Montreal, the new terminal will be accessible via the METbus express shuttle, which connects passengers to the Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke metro station. The airport site will also feature:
- 2,600 parking spaces
- A 500-meter drop-off zone with three traffic lanes
Food and Retail Options
Upon opening, food and retail options will feature exclusively Quebec-based businesses, including:
- Bâton Rouge restaurant
- Café Dépôt
- A travel essentials store
Community Support
A survey conducted by Léger indicated strong community backing for the new terminal, with 77% of local residents supporting the initiative. This validation underscores the terminal’s expected positive impact on Greater Montreal’s connectivity and its travel landscape.
Charles Roberge, CEO of YHU Infrastructure, highlighted the project as a transformational leap in Montreal’s transportation experience, emphasizing collaboration with the MET. The terminal is poised to redefine travel for residents and visitors alike.
