Southern Quebec Braces for Nearly 10 cm of Snow

Southern Quebec is preparing for a significant snowfall, with forecasts indicating nearly 10 centimeters of snow. On Sunday, regions including Greater Montreal, Montérégie, Drummondville, and Estrie experienced varying amounts of snow accumulation.
Snow Accumulation Details
According to Environment Canada, the anticipated snowfall ranged from 5 to 10 centimeters. Actual measurements reported approximately:
- 9 cm in Montreal
- 12 cm in Trois-Rivières
- 15 cm in Joliette
- 16 cm in Drummondville
Meteorologist Kathleen Maynard noted that by 4 PM, most of the snowfall had concluded, leaving only “one or two hours” of light precipitation in Beauce. Throughout the day, visibility was reduced due to the heavy snowfall, which fell at rates of up to 2 cm per hour.
Weather Conditions and Impact
In Montreal, temperatures hovered around zero degrees Celsius. However, the wind chill made it feel like -8 degrees in the afternoon. Gusts between 30 and 50 km/h contributed to blowing snow conditions.
Road Conditions
Drivers were encouraged to exercise caution. On Sunday morning, a vehicle accident on Highway A-20 near Saint-Hyacinthe led to the closure of one lane. Additionally, Highway A-40 in Montreal was closed in the eastbound direction due to an accident at exit 77 (Boulevard Lacordaire).
Looking Ahead
The upcoming week will likely see stable temperatures around zero, accompanied by intermittent flurries on Monday and overnight into Tuesday. On Wednesday, additional snowfall is predicted, followed by a more significant weather system on Thursday, which may bring snow, ice, or rain.
Maynard’s commentary on current conditions emphasizes that seasonal transitions are still far off, stating, “It’s not really a spring-like air.”
