Blackpool Zoo Proposes New Safari Events Tent

Blackpool Zoo is seeking planning approval for a new structure known as the “Safari Events Tent.” This proposal is part of the zoo’s ongoing investment strategy following record visitor numbers in 2025.

Planning Application Details

The application was submitted to Blackpool Council on February 25, 2026, and validated on March 13. It requests full planning permission to erect a tent structure that will serve as a visitor events space.

Features of the Proposed Tent

  • The tent will be centrally located between the main café and the birds’ Display Arena.
  • It is designed for various functions, including corporate meetings and team-building activities.
  • Construction will consist of timber posts with a platform base and no permanent foundations.
  • The walls will be sand-colored canvas, while the roof will be green, equipped with roll-up panels and large clear windows.
  • Dimensions: approximately 5.4 meters by 19.0 meters, with an eave height of 2.6 meters and a ridge height of 3.8 meters.

Site Location

The designated site covers an area of 102 square meters and is currently used for public performances and meetings. Described as heavily trafficked, this area is predominantly composed of hard standing and holds minimal ecological value.

Biodiversity Considerations

As the development is not expected to impact priority habitats, Blackpool Zoo claims an exemption from biodiversity net gain mandates since it affects less than 25 square meters of non-priority onsite habitat.

Investment and Future Developments

This planning application is part of a broader investment movement. Blackpool Zoo experienced a 6% increase in visitor numbers in 2025, surpassing its previous record set in 2019.

Zoo Director Darren Webster noted the importance of continued investment in both animal welfare and the overall visitor experience, despite rising operational costs. Additionally, plans are underway for a £500,000 redevelopment of the outdoor giraffe habitat, which is expected to open in spring 2026.

Final Steps in Planning

The application was prepared by agent Paul Kidley from Design Group Chester, following pre-application consultations with Blackpool Council in January 2026.

With the potential addition of the Safari Events Tent, Blackpool Zoo aims to enhance its visitor experience and adapt to growing interest.
