Hydro to Host Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony is set to take place at The Hydro in Glasgow this summer. Scheduled for 23 July 2026, this event promises a unique “Clyde-built experience for the world.” This will mark the first time in Games history that the opening ceremony will occur indoors, in an arena setting.

Volunteers for the Ceremony

Approximately 700 volunteers will be recruited for this spectacular event. The organizers are seeking dancers, theatre performers, musicians, and other talented individuals. Interested candidates can apply until 24 April 2026.

Louisa Mahon, chief marketing and ceremonies officer for Glasgow 2026, stated, “We aim to create a ceremony that is designed to be experienced, not merely observed.” She leads a dedicated team, which includes:

  • Roxana Cole – Show and Staging Director
  • Emily Jane Boyle – Choreographer
  • Carole Millar – Costume Designer

Mahons emphasizes collaboration with exceptional female creatives to ensure the event is bold and authentically representative of Glasgow.

The minimum age for volunteers is set at 16, with no previous experience required. Organizers encourage passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate, showcasing Glasgow’s local communities and cultures. If demand exceeds expectations, the application deadline may be advanced.
