France-Élaine Duranceau Endorses Christine Fréchette in CAQ Leadership Race

France-Élaine Duranceau, Quebec’s Treasury Board President, publicly endorsed Christine Fréchette in the CAQ leadership race. The announcement came just before the pivotal first debate, emphasizing Duranceau’s strategic timing.
Support Ahead of the First Debate
Duranceau revealed her support through social media, confirming that Fréchette has known about this backing for a while. Informal discussions initiated at the start of the leadership race had delayed the announcement. Duranceau was concerned that an early endorsement could detract from her media message, particularly amid negotiations with medical specialists.
Timing of the Endorsement
As negotiations continue, Duranceau feels the moment has arrived to express her preference. This announcement follows the release of the Girard budget earlier in the week. As Secretary of the Treasury, Duranceau has focused on expenditure management strategies, although she does not influence fund allocations among programs.
Achievements of Christine Fréchette
In justifying her endorsement, Duranceau praised Fréchette’s record at the Immigration and Economy ministries. Upon entering politics, Fréchette successfully advocated for an increase in the number of new arrivals in Quebec via the continuous Quebec Experience Program, despite a campaign promise from the Premier to lower thresholds.
- Fréchette faced significant pressure but navigated discussions effectively with the Premier and other ministers.
- She assumed leadership during a parliamentary commission that addressed a comprehensive energy reform plan, demonstrating her capability.
Current Political Landscape
With this endorsement, Duranceau is the 35th member of the CAQ caucus to support Fréchette, while her rival Bernard Drainville has garnered 15 endorsements. The two candidates will face off for the first time at 10 AM today during an official debate.
Upcoming Leadership Election
A previous event organized by young CAQ members allowed candidates to share their ideas, but it lacked direct exchanges. The election for the new CAQ leader—and consequently the new Premier—will take place on April 12. Over 20,000 eligible members will vote on this critical leadership decision.
