Toronto Braces for Record-Breaking Snowfall as Winter Meets Spring

As spring arrives, Toronto is poised to experience record-breaking snowfall. A special weather statement is in effect, with parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) under a freezing rain warning. This includes regions in York, Peel, and Halton.

Weather Forecast for Toronto

On Friday, the weather is expected to shift from wintery conditions to rain by the afternoon. The predicted high temperature is 6°C. As the weekend approaches, conditions will remain variable. Saturday will bring cloudy skies and a high of 5°C, while Sunday will see rain again, with temperatures reaching 6°C.

Snow Accumulation This Winter

This winter has already been one of the snowiest on record for Toronto. So far, 189.2 centimeters of snow have fallen at Pearson Airport. This amount is about 75 centimeters above the average seasonal total.

  • Snowiest winter on record occurred in 1938/39 with 207.4 centimeters.
  • Previous seasons have also recorded high snowfall levels, surpassing current totals.
  • The average snowfall from now until the season’s end is about 11 centimeters.

Retired Environment Canada Senior Climatologist David Phillips emphasized that snowfall may still continue in the coming week. He indicated that comparing this year’s totals to previous years is complex due to the remaining winter period.

The Impact of Snow on Toronto

Phillips remarked that even if no additional snow falls, Toronto would still have 65 percent more than the typical winter. The ground has remained snow-covered for nearly two months, without the usual thaw. This extended winter has certainly left its mark on residents, with the accumulation always on their minds.

As such, Torontonians must prepare for continued winter weather, even as spring officially begins.
