No Immunity for Revenue Quebec Official, Argues ‘Sarto’ Lacroix

Jean-Noël “Sarto” Lacroix is challenging a decision regarding his lawsuit against a Revenue Quebec official. The legal dispute centers on whether Sébastien Saint-Hilaire, a tax collector, should be granted immunity in this case.
No Immunity for Revenue Quebec Official in Lacroix Case
Lacroix’s lawyer, Me Martin André Roy, argues that Saint-Hilaire should be personally accountable for actions committed during the management of Lacroix’s tax issues. This lawsuit, amounting to $6.3 million, was initiated last June.
Details of the Lawsuit
- Claim made against Revenue Quebec and its official for alleged errors.
- Accusations involve mismanagement of Lacroix’s tax files and wrongful assessment notices.
- The seizure of Lacroix’s luxury mansion in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures was later annulled by the court.
Previously, Saint-Hilaire had filed a motion to declare the lawsuit inadmissible. In December, the court ruled that he could not be personally held liable since he acted within the scope of his duties.
Government’s Stance
Revenue Quebec has stated that it would cover any punitive damages awarded to Lacroix. This assertion raises concerns about accountability among government officials, as it may suggest they are shielded from repercussions due to their employment.
Upcoming Court Dates
The next hearing is scheduled for May. The outcome will be closely monitored, as it addresses the accountability of tax officials in Quebec.
In addition, Lacroix faces claims of approximately $2.5 million in taxes and excise duties from both provincial and federal revenue agencies. This controversial figure is also known for his presence on TikTok, where he promotes contests and his kitchen business.
Further developments in this case will be reported by El-Balad.
