Senegalese Nationals’ AFCON Detention Appeal Trial Postponed

A Moroccan court has delayed the appeal trial for 18 Senegalese nationals detained during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. Originally scheduled for Monday, the new hearing date is set for March 30th.
Background of the Detention
The Senegalese fans were arrested amid chaotic scenes during a match held in January between Senegal and Morocco. The officials disallowed a goal for Senegal and subsequently awarded a penalty to Morocco. This decision led to heated protests, with the Senegalese team briefly leaving the pitch.
Fan Misconduct and Damage
Fans reacted by throwing chairs onto the field and clashing with security stewards. This disorder resulted in damages estimated at nearly half a million dollars.
Convictions and Sentences
- 18 Senegalese nationals and 1 French citizen were convicted last month.
- Sentences range from three months to one year in prison.
- Fines imposed on the defendants reach up to $550.
International Response
The incident garnered significant diplomatic attention, prompting the presence of Senegalese and French diplomats at the trial’s initial hearing. Following these events, both Senegal and Morocco took steps to safeguard their diplomatic relationship. Senegal’s prime minister made a visit to Rabat to sign investment agreements aimed at fostering cooperation between the two countries.
