Gasly Confident After Impressive China Sprint Qualifying Performance

Pierre Gasly delivered an outstanding performance during the Sprint Qualifying at the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix. As a result, the Alpine driver will start the Saturday Sprint from seventh position on the grid. This achievement follows his successful advancement to the final segment of Sprint Qualifying, where he set a time that surpassed that of fellow competitor Max Verstappen.

Gasly’s Reflection on Performance

Gasly expressed his satisfaction with his performance, especially in contrast to his tenth-place finish in Australia. He secured the last point available at the season opener and noted significant improvements since then.

“I’m extremely pleased with that, especially after last week,” Gasly said. “I think we found a lot more performance from good learnings in Melbourne.” His confidence stems from feeling more comfortable in the car, evident from the very first lap.

Looking Ahead

Gasly is optimistic about his chances for scoring points in the Sprint. He mentioned the team’s ongoing development and potential for better performance compared to earlier races. However, he acknowledged challenges, particularly concerning tire graining noted during practice.

Colapinto’s Struggles

Gasly’s teammate, Franco Colapinto, faced difficulties during the Sprint Qualifying. Though he advanced to the second segment, Colapinto will start from sixteenth position due to performance issues.

  • Colapinto struggled with track knowledge, making it difficult to achieve the desired pace.
  • Despite showing potential in Free Practice 1, he could not replicate that performance in Qualifying.
  • Gasly’s success gives the team hope, but Colapinto aims to improve his understanding of the car.

The Chinese Grand Prix presents a significant opportunity for Alpine as they look to build on their performance this season. Both drivers are keen to gather more points, with Gasly leading the charge after an impressive qualifying session.
