Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GPs Canceled for April

The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, originally scheduled for April, have been officially canceled. This decision was made after thorough evaluations of the current situation in the Middle East. Alongside these events, the Formula 2, Formula 3, and F1 Academy rounds will also not be held as planned.

Decision Explained

The cancellation follows consultations between Formula 1, the FIA, and local promoters. Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed the difficulty in making this choice but emphasized that it is necessary given the circumstances. He extended gratitude to the FIA and the promoters for their continued support.

Safety Concerns

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, highlighted the importance of prioritizing safety in this decision. He voiced hopes for a swift return to stability and calm in the region. “Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are crucial to our racing calendar,” he stated, expressing eagerness to return when conditions improve.

Reactions from Local Officials

  • Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa: Chief Executive of the Bahrain International Circuit, supported the decision and expressed thanks for the support from Formula 1 and the FIA.
  • HRH Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal: Chairman of the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation, acknowledged the anticipation for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah but respected the decision made by Formula 1.

Fans had been eager for the return of Formula 1 in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Looking forward, officials hope for the chance to welcome fans back in the future as soon as conditions permit.
