Vitor Petrino Criticizes UFC Rankings Favoring Declining Tai Tuivasa

Vitor Petrino has expressed criticism regarding the UFC rankings, specifically concerning Tai Tuivasa’s continued presence despite a lengthy losing streak. The Brazilian fighter, currently competing as a heavyweight, is set to fight Steven Asplund at UFC Vegas 114, aiming to secure his third victory in the promotion.
Ranking Controversy in the UFC
Petrino was recently ranked No. 15 in the UFC heavyweight division following Jailton Almeida’s departure. However, just days before his fight on March 14, 2025, he was removed from the rankings. This change saw Tuivasa reinstated in the same position, despite being on a six-fight losing streak, with four losses coming by knockout or submission.
Commenting on the situation, Petrino stated, “I don’t know how that ranking works… but I’m not in a rush.” He acknowledged that while his removal was unexpected, he remains confident about returning to a favorable ranking in the future. His tenure in the UFC includes a record of 4-2 as a light heavyweight before making the move up to heavyweight.
Heavyweight Transformation
Petrino has experienced significant improvements since moving up to heavyweight. He highlighted his training regimen, including better sleep and a more flexible diet. He recalled his struggles with weight cutting in the light heavyweight division, describing the difficulty of getting proper rest during that time.
Since his transition, Petrino has noted physical benefits. He stated he would be “leaner and heavier” in his upcoming bout compared to his last fight in Rio de Janeiro. Originally, he was scheduled to face Kennedy Nzechukwu, but the opponent changed multiple times leading up to the fight.
Fight Strategy and Future Goals
Petrino, who has won three bonuses in his UFC career, is focused on delivering an intense performance against Asplund. He aims for a bonus-worthy finish, saying, “The idea is to chase that 100k bonus.” Petrino is determined to secure a knockout or submission victory before the third round.
“There are several big names out there, but my focus is on Steven right now,” he emphasized, demonstrating a strategic approach to his immediate plans. As Petrino prepares for the fight, he remains optimistic about moving back into the rankings with a victory against Asplund, who impressively won his UFC debut with a knockout.
