Regulations Ban Fees for Changing or Cancelling Internet, Cellphone Plans

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has introduced a significant regulatory change that bans fees associated with altering or canceling internet and cellphone plans. This announcement, made on Thursday, aims to enhance consumer flexibility and eliminate unexpected costs.
Key Changes in Telecommunications Regulations
The decision to remove these fees comes after a public consultation, which revealed that such charges deter Canadians from switching their telecommunications services. Vicky Eatrides, CRTC chairperson and CEO, emphasized the goal of this initiative: empowering consumers to better manage their services.
Details of the Fee Elimination
- No fees for activating, changing, or canceling plans.
- Increased consumer control over internet and cellphone services.
- Support for Canadians to access better deals without incurring extra costs.
The CRTC will also introduce measures in the upcoming months to simplify the process of comparing and selecting telecommunications plans. These efforts include strengthening existing Consumer Protection Codes, namely the Internet Code and the Wireless Code.
This proactive move reflects the commission’s commitment to foster a more consumer-friendly telecommunications market in Canada.
