Meet Nika Amashukeli: Referee for France vs England Six Nations Match

Nika Amashukeli is set to officiate the highly anticipated Six Nations match between France and England in Paris. This fixture, originally scheduled to see Australian referee Nic Berry at the helm, has undergone a change due to Berry’s inability to travel to Europe amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Nika Amashukeli: A Trailblazer in Refereeing
The 31-year-old Georgian referee is making headlines as he steps into another significant role. Amashukeli gained international recognition during the 2023 World Cup, where he made history as the first referee from Georgia to officiate at this prestigious tournament. Notably, he also became the youngest referee appointed to a men’s World Cup panel since Wayne Barnes in 2007.
Early Life and Career
Before his refereeing journey, Amashukeli played rugby for Georgia at the junior level, specializing as a centre. Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short at the age of 20 due to multiple concussions and injuries. In response to the need for improved officiating within Georgian rugby, he was recruited as a referee through a program established in collaboration with the Irish Rugby Football Union.
During this time, Amashukeli benefitted from mentorship under Irish referee David McHugh, who has experience officiating at the 1995, 1999, and 2003 World Cups. This mentorship helped refine his skills and paved the way for his future success.
Notable Appointments and Achievements
Amashukeli’s ascent in the refereeing ranks began with his first international appointment in July 2021, where he officiated a match between Wales and Canada. This marked his debut involving a Tier One nation.
Just seven months later, he made his Six Nations debut, quickly establishing himself as a referee of significant potential and promise.
