Special Weather Alert Issued for Toronto and GTA as Snow Approaches

Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are preparing for winter weather as a special weather alert has been issued. Despite spring’s arrival in eight days, snowfall is anticipated this Friday.

Snowfall Forecast for Toronto and the GTA

Environment Canada has warned residents to expect potential snow accumulation. The city could experience snowfall rates between two to four centimetres from Friday morning to afternoon. Although total snowfall amounts may not be excessive, the rapid snowfall may lead to slippery roads.

Expected Snow Accumulations

  • Toronto: Total snowfall of 5 to 8 centimetres.
  • Greater Toronto Area (GTA): Areas such as Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa, and Whitby may see 10 to 15 centimetres.
  • Higher elevations like the Oak Ridges Moraine are likely to experience the heaviest snowfall.

As the day progresses, the snow may transition to rain showers with temperatures expected to rise above freezing.

Travel Advisory and Conditions

Environment Canada has cautioned that hazardous travel conditions are likely. Morning temperatures will hover around 3°C, feeling like -10°C due to wind chill. Friday night is forecasted to bring a dip to -2°C, further contributing to icy roads and sidewalks.

Winds Affecting Hamilton and Niagara Region

In addition to snowfall, residents in Hamilton and the Niagara Region should prepare for strong winds late Friday afternoon. Winds are projected to develop, with gusts reaching up to 60-70 km/h, intensifying to 70-90 km/h in the evening. These conditions are expected to ease later Friday night.

Weekend Weather Outlook

The weekend forecast indicates a mix of sun and clouds on Saturday, with a high of 2°C. Sunday may bring additional periods of snow or rain, with temperatures peaking at 4°C.

Residents are advised to monitor conditions closely and prepare for rapidly changing weather and travel situations.
