Scrubs Boss Reveals J.D.’s Number of Children in Revival

The revival of “Scrubs” has added complexity to J.D.’s life, particularly regarding his family. Showrunner Aseem Batra confirmed the number of J.D.’s children is clear: he has two sons.
J.D.’s Children Revealed
During the original run of the series, J.D. and Kim Briggs welcomed their son, Sam, in Season 7, Episode 2, which broadcast on November 1, 2007. Sam continues to be part of J.D.’s story in the revival.
In the Season 10 premiere, J.D. mentions working as a concierge doctor to spend more time with his “kids,” implying the existence of another son, Ollie. This new addition is confirmed in Season 10, Episode 4, where J.D. states he will have Ollie “next weekend,” indicating he recently built a bunk bed for him.
Timeline and Canon
Fans may recall that the much-criticized ninth season suggested J.D. and Elliot were expecting their first child. However, Batra clarified the current canon: J.D. has two children — Sam with Kim and Ollie with Elliot. Since the revival ignores Season 9, it is implied that Ollie was born after the events covered in that season.
Why Kids Aren’t Featured Yet
Despite hopes for Sam and Ollie’s on-screen introduction, Batra noted that early drafts of the script included scenes with J.D.’s children. However, these scenes were cut to maintain focus on life within Sacred Heart Hospital.
- Only nine episodes were produced for the revival.
- The writers aimed to preserve the show’s essence as a medical comedy.
Batra explained that it was essential to create a cohesive world centered on the hospital. This led to a conscious decision to steer away from family dynamics in the revival.
Future Appearances
While Sam and Ollie have yet to be featured, there is potential for their introduction in subsequent seasons. Batra expressed interest in bringing back Kim and Sean, played by Elizabeth Banks and Scott Foley, respectively. Both are pivotal figures in J.D. and Elliot’s past and could enrich the storyline.
As the revival progresses, fans may see new developments concerning J.D.’s family, alongside the familiar setting of Sacred Heart Hospital.
