Pakistan Debuts Four Players in First ODI Against Bangladesh

Pakistan is set to debut four new players in their upcoming ODI match against Bangladesh, marking a significant change in the squad composition. This is the first time since 2008 that the team will feature as many debutants in an ODI match, and only the second instance in the last 43 years.
Pakistan’s ODI Squad: A Fresh Start
The decision to include these young players comes on the eve of the match, following disappointing performances in the T20 World Cup. Coach Mike Hesson emphasized that these players have “earned the right” to compete at the senior level after their impressive showings with the Shaheens.
Debutants in the Lineup
- Farhan: At 30 years old, he has not played a List A match since 2024, but his recent T20 performances caught the selectors’ attention.
- Shamyl: The 21-year-old is recognized as a top young talent and was a standout performer in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
- Abdul Samad: Aged 28, he is known for his explosive batting in T20s and will aim to replicate that form in ODIs.
- Maaz Sadaqat: As the youngest debutant at 20, he is transitioning his T20 success into the longer format.
These uncapped players replace several established veterans, including Babar Azam, Saim Ayub, Mohammad Nawaz, and Naseem Shah, as the Pakistan Cricket Board looks to rejuvenate the squad.
Expectations and Challenges
Hesson expressed confidence in the new lineup, stating that they are excited to face the challenge of adapting quickly to the playing conditions in Bangladesh. The team aims to be competitive despite the unique challenges of playing in foreign conditions.
Upcoming Matches
This ODI series against Bangladesh marks Pakistan’s last international engagement before the Pakistan Super League (PSL) starts on March 26. The teams will compete in three ODIs on March 11, 13, and 15, all taking place in Dhaka.
As Pakistan looks to the future with a blend of youth and experience, the debut of these four players could set the tone for a new era in their ODI cricket journey.
