Quebec Schools Preemptively Close Ahead of Freezing Rain Storm

In anticipation of a significant ice storm, numerous schools in southern Quebec have announced closures for Wednesday. The impending weather event has prompted preemptive actions from various educational institutions to ensure safety.
School Closures Across Southern Quebec
The Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM) has declared all its schools, daycare services, and administrative offices closed on Wednesday. This decision encompasses adult education classes as well.
Similarly, the English Montreal School Board shared on social media that it will also close all schools, daycares, adult and vocational centers, as well as its administration building. The Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys confirmed its closure on its website, including remote classes.
The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, serving Montreal’s North Shore, communicated via email on Tuesday that students should stay home, alongside the cancellation of daycare services. Additionally, the Centre de services scolaire des Mille-Îles (CSSMI) has also confirmed its schools will be closed.
In the Chaudière-Appalaches region, the Centre de services scolaire des Navigateurs (CSSDN) has announced its closure, along with daycare services. In Quebec City, the Centre de services scolaire de la Capitale (CSSC) has joined in closing for the day. The CSSDN stated that the closure was preemptive to provide parents ample time to arrange for alternative care.
Universities and CEGEPs Respond
All schools and centers under the Centre de services scolaire de Laval will also be closed, canceling day and evening classes, including online formats. Transportation services will be suspended, and daycare operations will not be available. Additionally, universities such as Concordia and McGill are cancelling in-person classes on Wednesday.
Numerous CEGEPs throughout southern Quebec are following suit with similar closures.

Environment Canada has issued an “orange alert” across much of southern Quebec. Residents are being advised to prepare for severe disruption caused by the anticipated weather.
- Forecast predicts 20 to 30 millimeters of freezing rain on Wednesday.
