Canada Announces Three Passport Changes

Canada is set to implement notable changes to its passport fees and processing policies. The increase marks the first adjustment since 2013, responding to rising production costs for travel documents.

New Passport Fees Effective March 31

Effective March 31, the following changes will take place:

  • The regular adult passport, valid for ten years, will increase to CAD 163.50, an increase of CAD 3.50.
  • The five-year version of the adult passport will now cost CAD 122.50, up by CAD 2.50.
  • The child passport, also valid for five years, will be priced at CAD 58.50, a CAD 1.50 increase.

These new rates are relatively lower than the overall inflation rate of 36% experienced over the past 13 years.

Annual Adjustments to Fees

In addition to fee increases, the Canadian government has announced that passport fees will be adjusted annually based on inflation. This aims to align costs with economic changes.

Improved Processing Times and Refunds

Starting April 1, passports will be processed within 30 business days. If the processing time exceeds this period, applicants will receive a full refund automatically. This new refund policy aims to enhance customer satisfaction and streamline the application experience.

Previously, only a portion of fees was refunded based on processing delays. The government plans to ensure that the full commitment to timely service is reflected in the refund process.

Overall, these changes are expected to improve the travel document issuance process, making it more efficient for Canadians.
