Vote to Name the Toronto Zoo’s Adorable Baby Giraffe

The Toronto Zoo is inviting the public to participate in naming its new baby giraffe, born on February 2. This adorable calf arrived around 1:30 a.m., more than a month after her father Kiko tragically passed away due to an accident involving a habitat door. Dolf DeJong, the CEO of the Toronto Zoo, expressed excitement about the healthy arrival of this Masai giraffe, emphasizing the significance of welcoming new members to their population.
Public Voting for the Baby Giraffe’s Name
A public vote to name the baby giraffe will take place starting Tuesday and will run until March 23. The Kenyan Honorary Consulate in Toronto has suggested five Swahili names for the public to choose from:
- Binti: Meaning daughter.
- Imara: Meaning strong and resilient.
- Nyota: Meaning star.
- Neema: Meaning grace.
- Sanaa: Meaning beauty or art.
Following the voting period, the zoo will announce the chosen name. The baby giraffe will be on public display for the first time on March 13.
The Calf’s Journey and Mom’s Role
DeJong noted the playful nature of the calf, mentioning her tendency to explore her surroundings. He described moments when she exhibited “zoomies,” bouncing around with excitement. Since Kiko’s passing, the care of the calf has been entirely left to her mother, Mstari.
DeJong remarked on Mstari’s excellent parenting skills, stating, “She is a phenomenal single mom.” He added that the young giraffe is thriving and does not miss her father, as male giraffes typically do not participate in raising their young.
The Toronto Zoo continues to celebrate the arrival of this charming calf, ensuring she is well cared for and that the public can share in the joy of naming her.
