Ontario Faces Torrential Downpour: Half-Month’s Rainfall Expected in 24 Hours
Residents of Ontario are bracing for a substantial weather event as torrential rainfall is forecasted to hit the region. A special weather statement is currently in effect for Toronto and parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This system could deliver more than half a month’s worth of rain within a 24-hour span.
Weather Forecast and Expected Rainfall
According to Environment Canada, Toronto may receive between 20 and 40 millimeters of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. The rainfall is attributed to a series of low-pressure systems moving through southern Ontario.
Risks of Localized Flooding
There is a high risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas, especially given the compact ground conditions from the cold season. Bill Coulter, a meteorologist at CP24, emphasized that the heavy rains could lead to water pooling on roads and flash floods.
- Heavy rain expected to start around midnight
- More than half a month’s rain possible in less than 24 hours
- Rain will move eastward late Wednesday afternoon
- Cold air and potential winter precipitation will follow
Keep Prepared for Changes in Weather
Coulter stated that Toronto experiences an average of 70 to 80 millimeters of rain per month at Pearson Airport. Therefore, this upcoming rainfall could significantly exceed typical monthly averages.
After the storm passes, colder temperatures are anticipated, signaling a return to wintry conditions for the end of the week. The expected high for Toronto on Tuesday is around 13°C, with a mix of sun and clouds expected before the rain begins.
Residents are urged to stay updated on weather advisories and prepare for potential hazards that may arise from this significant rainfall.
