NYPD: Explosive Device Thrown Near Mayor Mamdani’s Residence

New York City police reported that an explosive device was thrown during protests outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s home over the weekend. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, involved a jar filled with nuts, bolts, and screws. Wrapped in black tape and equipped with a fuse, the device was ignited by a counter-protester but extinguished before explosion, raising concerns about its potential to cause serious injury or death.
NYPD Investigates Explosive Device Incident
The New York City Police Commissioner, Jessica Tisch, confirmed the incident during a press conference. She stated that two individuals were taken into custody following the unrest at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s residence in Manhattan. Police are currently examining a second device that was thrown during the protests.
Details of the Protest
The protests featured opposing groups, with far-right activist Jake Lang leading a demonstration against what he claims is an Islamic “takeover” in New York City. Approximately 20 people participated in Lang’s protest, while around 125 counter-protesters gathered in response, denouncing the far-right group’s actions as hateful.
- Location: Gracie Mansion, Manhattan
- Protest Leader: Jake Lang
- Counter-Protesters: Approximately 125
- Initial Arrests: Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi
- Devices Used: At least two explosive devices
During the protests, Emir Balat ignited and threw the first device, which rolled near police officers before going out. He subsequently attempted to deploy a second explosive device on the street before fleeing. Both Balat and Kayumi were arrested on the scene.
Response from Mayor Mamdani
In a statement following the protests, Mayor Mamdani condemned the actions taken during the demonstration. He expressed that violence at protests is never acceptable, highlighting that the use of an explosive device represents a serious criminal act. “What took place is reprehensible and contrary to who we are as a city,” he stated.
Ongoing Investigations
The NYPD is leading the investigation in conjunction with the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice. Commissioner Tisch indicated that, at this point, there is no evidence linking the incident to current geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and Iran, but investigations are ongoing.
