Monmouthshire’s Skills and Opportunities Enhanced by Local Growth Fund Investment

Monmouthshire is poised to enhance its economic landscape through significant investment, primarily aimed at local jobs and skills development. The Welsh Government announced the Local Growth Fund initiative in October 2025, allocating £547 million for projects across Wales from 2026 to 2029.

Investment Allocation for Monmouthshire

For the fiscal year 2026/27, Monmouthshire County Council has been earmarked £1.25 million in capital funding and £532,000 in revenue funding. This financial boost will facilitate various projects that address both local needs and growth opportunities.

Strategic Local Plan

The local plan devised by the council aims to fortify the local economy and create sustainable employment pathways. It emphasizes providing high-quality training and support for residents, ensuring they gain the necessary skills to meet employer demands.

Key Projects Supported by Fund

  • GrowthSpace: This initiative focuses on revitalizing vacant or underutilized sites, encouraging collaboration to create new business opportunities and jobs.
  • Monmouthshire Skills Centre: A state-of-the-art training hub will be established, equipped with modern facilities to enhance skills training and qualification attainment.
  • Inclusive Economic Growth: Programs will target accessibility and skill enhancement to boost Monmouthshire’s visitor economy and support sustainable growth in food businesses.
  • Entrepreneurial Support: Tailored advice will be provided to small enterprises, social enterprises, and rural businesses.

Focus on Workforce Development

There will be a strong emphasis on facilitating workforce entry, especially for young people and underrepresented groups. Dedicated programs will provide employability support and clear educational pathways.

Community Impact

Cllr Paul Griffiths, Monmouthshire County Council’s Deputy Leader, highlighted the importance of this funding. He stated, “This funding is about investing in the local economy and equipping people with the tools, skills, and spaces they need to thrive.”

By revitalizing buildings, supporting local businesses, and aiding residents in accessing training, Monmouthshire is laying the foundation for enduring economic growth that will benefit the community in both the present and future.
