Vancouver Canucks Trade Jett Woo to San Jose Sharks

On Thursday, the Vancouver Canucks made a significant move in the NHL, trading defenceman Jett Woo to the San Jose Sharks. The deal brings Jack Thompson to the Canucks in exchange.

Details of the Trade

Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin expressed gratitude towards Woo, highlighting his contributions to the AHL championship-winning team. “Jett was a key part of our AHL championship-winning team, and we would like to thank him for all that he has done for the Canucks organization,” Allvin stated.

Woo, drafted 37th overall by the Canucks in 2018, had a tenure marked by promise but ultimately did not break into the NHL. He played 293 regular-season AHL games without making an NHL appearance.

Jack Thompson: The New Addition

In exchange for Woo, the Canucks acquired Jack Thompson, a 23-year-old right-shot defenceman. Thompson was drafted 93rd overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and stands at 6 feet 1 inch, weighing 190 pounds.

  • Thompson played 34 NHL games, with 31 of those in the previous season.
  • He recorded four goals and ten points during the 2024-25 season with the Sharks.
  • This transaction marks Thompson’s second trade at the deadline, previously moving from the Lightning to the Sharks in 2024.

Future Prospects

It is anticipated that Thompson may get an opportunity to play for the Canucks this season, especially following recent roster changes. The team recalled Cole Clayton, a 26-year-old who has yet to make his NHL debut, after the departure of Tyler Myers and injury to Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

This trade highlights the Canucks’ strategy to strengthen their defensive lineup while providing Woo with a new opportunity in San Jose.
