NHL Transactions: Coleman and Whitecloud Attract Flames’ Attention

The Calgary Flames are actively engaged in trade discussions as the NHL transaction deadline approaches. General Manager Craig Conroy’s phone has been buzzing as numerous teams show interest in players like Blake Coleman and Zach Whitecloud.

NHL Transactions: Coleman and Whitecloud Attract Flames’ Attention

Blake Coleman, a 34-year-old winger, has been a subject of trade rumors for several months. Montreal Canadiens’ GM Kent Hughes has expressed a notable interest in Coleman. Over the current season, Coleman has scored 13 goals and provided nine assists in 48 games, maintaining a positive plus-minus rating of +9. He was originally acquired by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 2020 trade deadline, contributing to two consecutive Stanley Cup victories.

Contract Details and Trade Prospects

Coleman is under contract for the next season, with an annual average salary of $4.9 million. While the Flames are receiving offers for him, the proposals so far have not been compelling enough for a trade. According to insider Darren Dreger, the likelihood of Coleman being traded before Friday’s deadline stands at 40%.

Zach Whitecloud’s Situation

Like Coleman, defenseman Zach Whitecloud has attracted attention from other teams. The 29-year-old has two years remaining on his six-year contract worth $16.5 million. A portion of his salary, $2.75 million, counts against the salary cap. This season, Whitecloud has registered two goals and 11 points over 59 games.

Whitecloud joined the Flames in an earlier trade with the Vegas Golden Knights involving defenseman Rasmus Andersson. The Flames also sent choices in the draft to acquire Whitecloud, alongside defender Abram Wiebe.

Recent Transactions

This week, the Flames made a significant move by trading defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. In exchange, they received three second-round picks for 2026, promising prospect Jonathan Castagna, and defenseman Olli Maata.

Current Standing

Currently, Calgary sits second to last in the Pacific Division, with a record of 24-29-7. The team is 12 points away from the playoff position, facing a critical moment in their season.
