Increased Movement at the Astara Border Crossing
In response to rising tensions from ongoing US and Israeli military actions, the Azerbaijani government announced on Saturday that it would reopen the Astara Border Crossing. This decision came with the intent to facilitate the evacuation of its nationals and allow foreign nationals to exit Iran safely.
Evacuation Efforts and Statistics
Since the reopening, an estimated 370 to 400 people have crossed into Azerbaijan. This included more than 100 Azerbaijani citizens and expatriates from nearly 20 different countries.

Among those who crossed the border recently was a Pakistani family, who embarked on a challenging journey from Tehran to Azerbaijan’s southernmost city. Rameeza, a young girl from the family, shared their experience: “We were living in Iran. We came here by road until the border region. From there, we crossed the border,” she explained.
Personal Accounts of Fleeing
Sadullah Khan, Rameeza’s father, expressed relief at their successful escape. He recounted the fears and horrors of living amid the bombardment in Tehran. “Two days ago, I left Tehran and headed to Astara, and now I am safe. So, I am relieved,” he stated.
