Aerial Footage Reveals Progress on Jacques-Chirac Park Project

A new urban park, named Jacques-Chirac Park, is set to open in Nîmes in the fall of 2027. Located south of the city center, this impressive park will connect the Triangle de la Gare to the southern urban thoroughfare. Spanning over 1.5 kilometers, it will serve as a vital link in the Diagonale Verte, enhancing the area’s ecological landscape.

Park Features and Size

Jacques-Chirac Park will cover a total area of 10 hectares, designed for walking, relaxation, and recreational activities. The project is budgeted at €19 million.

A Rich Natural Heritage

The site showcases a remarkable natural heritage developed over 25 years of reforestation. It includes diverse plant life, such as:

  • Centennial plane trees
  • Cedar trees
  • Pinus pinea (umbrella pines)
  • Osage orange trees
  • Giant bamboos

These elements create a unique environment akin to an arboretum in the heart of the city. According to landscape architect Philippe Deliau, the park will play a crucial role in local biodiversity by connecting ecological and hydraulic systems to the Vistre River.

Sustainable Design Approach

The project emphasizes the importance of preserving existing vegetation. While 178 hazardous trees will be removed, 1,651 new trees will be planted along with nearly 14,000 shrubs and plants, and 17,000 square meters of seeded meadows.

Pioneering features include:

  • Removal and regeneration of dense plant areas.
  • Focused care for existing trees to restore their balance.
  • Management plans to maintain biodiversity, which already supports 24 bird species.

Historical Significance and Rehabilitation

The park’s development will honor the site’s historical significance, including the preservation of old greenhouses and irrigation systems from former nurseries. Key structures such as:

  • The rehabilitated pumping station, now called “La Vigie.”
  • The Mas des Ouvriers and the Mas Pichon buildings.

These structures will contribute to the park’s identity and memory.

Landscape Diversity

The park will offer a variety of landscapes and recreational spaces. Visitors can enjoy:

  • Children’s play areas
  • Sports facilities
  • Relaxation zones

The southern section will connect to the Vistre River, enhancing the relationship between natural water bodies and public spaces.

Modern Amenities

Jacques-Chirac Park aims to cater to diverse needs across generations. It will feature:

  • Walking paths extending up to 3 kilometers
  • Observation points and bridges
  • Sporting grounds and festive areas

Educational signage will guide visitors through the park’s botanical and historical riches.

Water Management and Safety

The park incorporates significant public utility improvements, including stormwater management systems. These systems will help mitigate flood risks related to the Vistre and protect surrounding neighborhoods.

Overall, the Jacques-Chirac Park project integrates various disciplines, including landscaping, architecture, and civil engineering, to create a safe and sustainable environment for community use.
