Engagement and activism in Washington, D.C. are flourishing as residents gear up for several important events this March, particularly in honor of International Women’s Day. The city is abuzz with activities that cater to diverse interests, including safety training, cultural showcases, and opportunities for community involvement.

Upcoming Events in D.C.

Safety and Preparedness Training

On March 4, the DC LGBTQ+ Community Center will host a safety preparedness class from 7 to 9 p.m. This session focuses on non-violent tactics for handling emergencies, including natural disasters and social unrest. Participants will learn essential skills and develop action plans to manage unexpected situations.

Advocacy Campaign Orientation

The Free DC campaign will hold an orientation on March 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. via a virtual platform. This initiative aims to empower residents to safeguard D.C.’s autonomy and rights. Attendees will discover the movement’s structure and objectives, with opportunities to join local teams.

Private Military Contractors Discussion

Also on March 5, a discussion titled “Private Military Contractors: How Non-State Actors Are Changing War” will take place at The Institute of World Politics at 5 p.m. This event will explore the influence of private military contractors in modern warfare amid U.S. military actions globally, based on Dr. Caroline Batka’s research.

Rooting DC Urban Gardening Conference

On March 7, the 19th annual Rooting DC urban gardening conference is set for Eastern Senior High School from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event will feature workshops, booths showcasing local agriculture, and opportunities for community engagement. It welcomes participants of all gardening skill levels.

International Women’s Day Events

Rally at Malcolm X Park

On March 8, a rally dedicated to International Women’s Day will start at 2 p.m. in Malcolm X Park. The event will support immigrant women and those affected by police violence, co-sponsored by multiple groups, including DC Against the Trump Agenda. This rally highlights the need for solidarity and advocacy for vulnerable communities.

Cultural Worker Showcase

The DC Local 2 Global group is organizing an International Women’s Day Cultural Worker Showcase at Marx Cafe at 6 p.m. This event will feature performances in art, music, comedy, and dance. Tickets will be available at a sliding scale price between $10 and $20, with proceeds directed to aid for Cuba.

Sunrise DC Open Hub Meeting

Before the rally, on March 8 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Sunrise DC will host an open hub meeting. This gathering is ideal for young individuals interested in climate justice. New members are encouraged to stay for dedicated one-on-one sessions at the end.

Support and Contributions

  • Food Not Bombs: A mutual aid group seeking donations to support its winter meal distributions. Contributions will help provide emergency winter gear and meals.
