Emirates Enhances Payment Options in Kenya with Cellulant’s Split-Payment System

Emirates has launched an innovative split-payment solution for travelers in Kenya, enhancing payment options for air travel. This initiative is the result of a strategic partnership with Cellulant, a leading payment technology company in Africa.

Details of the Split-Payment System

The split-payment feature, enabled by Cellulant’s Tingg payment gateway, allows customers to combine various payment methods. These methods include mobile money services, local credit and debit cards, and mobile banking. This flexibility ensures customers can manage their transactions effectively, offering an initial payment followed by up to four additional installments within a 24-hour period.

Benefits for Travelers

  • Combines multiple payment methods for increased accessibility.
  • Offers flexibility to meet daily transaction limits.
  • Facilitates high-value bookings that might otherwise be abandoned.

Michael Muriuki, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Cellulant, emphasized that mobile money is essential for millions across Africa. He stated that enabling global travel payments through mobile solutions is crucial in helping customers complete significant transactions seamlessly.

Market Impact and Future Plans

Emirates’ Country Manager for Kenya, Christophe Leloup, highlighted the dynamic nature of the Kenyan market. The introduction of split payments aims to improve customer experience and accessibility. This move comes parallel to Emirates’ decision to add a third daily flight to the Dubai–Nairobi route starting March 1, 2026.

Regional Payment Partnerships

In addition to Kenya, Emirates and Cellulant are collaborating to facilitate various financing options in other African nations, including:

  • South Africa
  • Ghana
  • Zimbabwe

The Growing Significance of Mobile Payments

Mobile money is gaining traction across Africa, with over 1 billion mobile wallets and transactions surpassing $1 trillion. Despite its popularity, many customers face limitations that hinder high-value purchases like international flight tickets. The split-payment solution addresses this issue effectively.

Customers are encouraged to visit the Emirates website to book their tickets using the new split-payment option, thus ensuring a smooth and accessible travel experience.
