Priests Bless Goats on Farm Amid Foot and Mouth Outbreak

In Larnaca, priests from the old calendarist Kition bishopric performed a blessing for goats on a local farm amidst a foot and mouth disease outbreak. This event took place on a Wednesday night, shortly after the area experienced recent veterinary concerns.

Details of the Blessing Ceremony

Bishop Yerasimos, hierodeacon Chrystosomos, and priest Kyriacos conducted prayers to protect the livestock from the disease. The ceremony aimed to support the farmers and offered blessings for their livelihood.

Prayers for Animal Protection

  • Bishop Yerasimos prayed for animal health and strength.
  • He beseeched Saint Spyridon, Saint Tryphon, Saint Modestos, and Saint Mamas to intercede for the animals.

Following the prayers, Yerasimos and Chrysostomos visited another farm in the area. They were briefed on the disease’s impact and the situation on the farm. Yerasimos expressed his hope for divine protection over the livestock sector workers.

Official Response and Investigations

The agriculture ministry, led by Minister Maria Panayiotou, announced an investigation into the priests’ actions. The ministry emphasized the importance of following biosecurity protocols during the outbreak.

Regulations and Compliance Issues

  • Spokeswoman Sotiria Georgiadou noted that only those with legitimate work in contaminated areas were permitted entry.
  • She confirmed that the priests did not comply with the mandated biosecurity measures.

The minister highlighted the need to prevent unnecessary entry into affected zones to protect public health and livestock safety.

Old Calendarist Church’s Position

In response to the criticism, the old calendarist church maintained that the priests adhered to all health protocols during the blessing. They asserted that rigorous disinfection took place upon entering and exiting the farm.

The church expressed its solidarity with those affected by the outbreak, stating that their pastoral presence should not be criticized amid the ongoing crisis.
