Atlantic Canada Braces as Winter Storm Delivers Snow and Ice

Atlantic Canada faced severe winter weather as a powerful storm brought significant snow and ice to the region. Residents woke up Tuesday to challenging conditions following a night of heavy snowfall.

Storm Impact Across Atlantic Canada

The storm’s impact was notable across several provinces. In Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, meteorologist Chris Fogarty reported a snowfall accumulation of 20 centimeters by 11 p.m. on Monday. Public schools throughout Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador canceled classes to allow for road clean-up.

Record Snowfall in Newfoundland

Eastern Newfoundland, particularly the suburb of Paradise near St. John’s, experienced extreme snowfall. Recent reports from Environment Canada indicated that this region received over 150 centimeters of snow over the past week.

Warnings and Advisories

As of Tuesday morning, much of Atlantic Canada remained under winter storm and snowfall warnings. The only active advisories were for Newfoundland and Labrador, where Environment Canada warned of hazardous conditions. Southeastern Labrador could receive an additional 25 centimeters of snow, while the Great Northern Peninsula faced up to 20 centimeters more.

Preparation and Response

  • Temperatures dropped significantly, increasing the risk of icy roads.
  • Residents were advised to avoid travel unless necessary.
  • Clean-up crews were deployed to clear streets and main thoroughfares.

Many communities are working diligently to restore safe conditions as they brace for continued winter weather.
