Nor’easter Snowstorm Disrupts Travel Across Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia faced significant disruption on Monday due to a powerful nor’easter snowstorm that brought heavy snow and strong winds. Widespread flight cancellations and early school dismissals marked the day, as residents prepared for severe winter weather.
Snow Accumulation and Weather Forecast
Meteorologists forecasted that snowfall would range from 15 to 25 centimeters across the province. However, some areas, particularly along the South Shore, could see totals reach between 25 and 40 centimeters by Monday afternoon. The snow is projected to be particularly wet and heavy in eastern Nova Scotia, with the potential for rain and drizzle mixing in.
Travel and Safety Concerns
With the winter storm hitting, several flights were cancelled at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The combination of heavy snow and winds gusting between 60 and 80 km/h created hazardous travel conditions. In some exposed areas, gusts might even reach up to 90 km/h, leading to blowing and drifting snow that significantly reduces visibility.
Coastal Effects
Residents along the Atlantic coastline were warned of higher than normal water levels. These conditions were expected to persist into Monday night, while areas near the Northumberland Strait could experience similar effects on Tuesday. In response to the storm, the Halifax Regional Municipality has implemented a winter parking ban from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
- Snowfall Totals: 15 to 25 cm expected; over 25 cm in some areas.
- Wind Gusts: 60 to 80 km/h, with some areas up to 90 km/h.
- Travel Impact: Numerous flight cancellations; poor visibility and dangerous driving conditions.
- Coastal Warnings: Elevated water levels expected along the Atlantic coastline and Northumberland Strait.
The nor’easter storm illustrates the challenges of winter weather in Nova Scotia. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and travel advisories. Safety should remain a priority as the region copes with this severe winter event.
