South American Crime Gang Targets Luxury Goods in 60 Houston Home Burglaries
A wave of high-end burglaries has swept across the Houston area, involving over 60 luxury homes. Law enforcement has linked these incidents to a sophisticated South American crime gang known for its targeted approaches and advanced evasion techniques.
South American Crime Gang: A Growing Threat
The West University Place Police Chief, Gary Ratliff, confirmed the involvement of this organized crime network after a series of break-ins in various neighborhoods. The group’s operational tactics include the use of signal jammers and counter-surveillance measures to avoid detection.
According to reports, the South American Theft Group has committed numerous burglaries not only in Houston but also in surrounding counties and other states such as California, Florida, Wisconsin, and New York. This suggests a potentially larger nationwide operation.
Details of the Burglary Spree
West University Place has faced significant criminal activity, with seven confirmed burglaries attributed to the gang. Residents expressed their concerns at a public safety meeting, noting the frightening nature of the situation.
- Burglars typically target second-story windows from 7 to 9 p.m.
- They use ladders or patio furniture for easy access.
- Methods include breaking glass or prying windows open with tools.
- Security systems are disrupted using signal jammers.
- Stolen items are often transported in pillowcases or backpacks.
The culprits mainly steal valuable possessions, including designer handbags and jewelry. In one instance, residents were present during a break-in, but thankfully did not encounter the suspects directly.
Recent Arrests and Investigations
One significant arrest connected to these burglaries was that of Ignacio Castillo Contreras in February 2025. He was apprehended for a forced entry and was found with stolen jewelry and a radio frequency jammer.
Authorities have also identified another individual, Christian Mauricio Rubio Pizarro, as a person of interest. He currently faces unrelated charges and remains detained in Houston.
As investigations continue, police emphasize the intelligence and resourcefulness of the suspects. They often employ burner phones and various means to complicate tracking efforts.
This alarming trend of high-end burglaries reflects a serious issue that residents and law enforcement in Houston and beyond are actively addressing.
