MMRDA Awards Rs 40 Lakh Compensation to Metro Parapet Collapse Victim’s Family

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has awarded Rs 40 lakh in compensation to the family of Ramdhani Yadav, a victim of a tragic incident involving Metro Line 4. On Saturday, Ramdhani, aged 49, lost his life when a segment of a cement parapet wall fell onto the autorickshaw he was traveling in, located in Mulund.
Details of the Compensation
The compensation package includes two cheques: one for Rs 25 lakh and another for Rs 15 lakh, paid to Ramdhani’s wife. This decision comes after a prolonged delay, as the family had initially refrained from receiving the body until satisfactory compensation and employment assurances were provided.
Family’s Response
Ramdhani’s family eventually accepted his body from Rajawadi Hospital, following the payment of compensation. His elder brother, Ramsamujh Yadav, stated that they planned to transport the body to their village in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, for the last rites. He also noted that the MMRDA had verbally promised to offer a government job to one of Ramdhani’s daughters.
Government Support
In addition to the MMRDA’s compensation, the state government announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh. The family expects further insurance compensation, and relatives have urged local authorities to expedite the release of these funds. This is particularly important as they reside in Uttar Pradesh and may find it challenging to manage procedural formalities in Mumbai.
Community Reaction
Krishna Yadav, Ramdhani’s nephew, expressed that while the compensation cannot replace the loss, it would provide much-needed support. He highlighted the emotional turmoil faced by Ramdhani’s wife and younger daughter during this difficult time.
Incident Overview
The tragic accident occurred when the concrete segment fell onto an autorickshaw carrying Ramdhani and two other passengers, who sustained injuries. In the aftermath, two engineers have been suspended as part of an ongoing investigation. Chief engineer Abhijit Bhishikar and deputy engineer Snehal Sawant are among those suspended, following the earlier suspension of executive engineer Satyajit Salve.
Inquiry Launched
A departmental inquiry has been initiated against chief engineer Madhukar Kharat to assess any procedural failures that may have contributed to the incident.
