Police in Brooklyn have arrested a man in connection with a series of violent attacks that shocked the community. The assaults occurred at the Sunset Park subway station, targeting unsuspecting individuals without provocation.
Details of the Assaults at Sunset Park Subway Station
On Saturday, around 8:30 a.m., 25-year-old Curtis Signal initiated a violent rampage at the R train station located at 53rd Street and 4th Avenue. Among his victims was 43-year-old Benita Frias, who was on her way home from her job as a home health aide. Signal’s attacks began when he pushed a 51-year-old woman onto the tracks.
Frias was subsequently assaulted, suffering severe injuries, including bruising to her face and chest, a smashed knee, and trauma to the back of her head. Her daughter, Isamar Duran, described the incident as completely unprovoked. “She didn’t look at him on the face, there was no interaction,” Duran stated, emphasizing the randomness of the attack.
Victim’s Recovery and Family Concerns
Benita Frias underwent surgery on Monday as her family expressed deep concern for her mental and physical well-being. Duran noted, “She’s very traumatized, she’s in shock.” The other two victims of the incident were reported to be in stable condition, while Frias’ family anxiously awaited her recovery.
Curtis Signal’s Criminal Background
Curtis Signal, who is currently on probation, has a troubling history with the law. He has nine prior arrests over the last five years, primarily for assault, including two incidents occurring within the transit system. Following his arraignment on Sunday night, he faces multiple assault charges while being held without bail.
Duran expressed frustration at the situation, questioning how someone like Signal could be left on the streets. “Why is that person not even in jail? I don’t understand,” she lamented.
