Niall Treacy Crashes; Women’s Curling Team Victorious at 2026 Winter Olympics

Team GB’s participation in short track speed skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics has ended abruptly for Niall Treacy. Treacy suffered his third crash in as many events, failing to progress from the heats of the 500m.

Niall Treacy’s Short Track Challenges

The 25-year-old was the sole British representative in short track skating. He surprisingly reached the final in the 1500m event but crashed out. His difficulties continued in the 1000m heats, where he also fell.

Treacy admitted that the 500m distance is his least favorite, stating he is “not a natural sprinter.” His race began poorly when he was clipped on the opening corner by 18-year-old South Korean Rim Jong-un. Rim won the bronze medal in the 1000m event.

Crash Details

After needing a restart, Treacy skidded out midway through the race while under no immediate pressure. This unfortunate end to his races signifies the conclusion of British interest in short track skating for this Olympics.

Impact of Funding Cuts

The sport has faced challenges following a £4.8 million funding cut from UK Sport, a result of not winning any medals at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics. In 2014, Great Britain sent a team of five athletes to short track events, but participation has dwindled to only one in Milan.

Current Winners in the Competition

Dutch athlete Jens van’T Wout has already secured victories in both the 1000m and 1500m events. He remains in contention for a golden treble after successfully avoiding a mass pile-up in the heats.

The remaining rounds of the 500m competition will continue on Tuesday, featuring two more knockout rounds before the final.
