Australia Chooses Brown over Schutt, Opts to Bat Against New Zealand

In a strategic decision, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first against New Zealand in the inaugural women’s ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Australia, the defending champions, made a notable choice by leaving out their leading fast bowler, Megan Schutt. Captain Alyssa Healy explained that they favored the pace attack of Darcie Brown for this match.
Australia’s Lineup and Strategy
Sophie Molineux returned to the national team after a lengthy injury recovery, having last appeared in an ODI in December 2024. Australia included Alana King as another spinner, while Georgia Wareham was excluded from the playing XI. Brown and Kim Garth are set to open the bowling in Schutt’s absence. Healy emphasized that Schutt will be crucial as the tournament progresses.
New Zealand’s Response and Batting Strategy
New Zealand’s captain, Sophie Devine, had also indicated a preference to bat. The team selected three seamers: Lea Tahuhu, Jess Kerr, and Bree Illing, alongside spinner Eden Carson. Illing is relatively new to the international stage, making her fourth ODI appearance after debuting in March this year.

Devine remarked on the pitch condition, noting it appeared “absolutely flat.” However, during the pitch report, former Australian captain Aaron Finch described Australia’s choice to bat first as “a little strange,” considering the potential impact of dew in the second innings. Australia is looking to extend their impressive streak, having won their last 15 ODIs against New Zealand, dating back to 2017.
