Covid Cases Surge with New Variants ‘Nimbus’ and ‘Stratus’

As Covid cases rise, new variants named ‘Nimbus’ and ‘Stratus’ have emerged, raising concerns among health authorities. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is encouraging those over the age of 75 to get a free vaccine against Covid, which remains effective against these new strains.

Vaccination Guidance for the Elderly

The UKHSA emphasizes the importance of vaccinations not just for Covid, but also for flu and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). As winter approaches, the agency observes a rise in these illnesses.

Key Recommendations

  • Eligible individuals should book their Covid vaccinations promptly.
  • Vaccinations against flu and RSV are also essential.
  • Regular updates on variant interactions with the immune system will be available as new data emerges.

Dr. Alex Allen, a Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, noted, “Current data suggests that Nimbus and Stratus are not linked to more severe disease. Vaccines presently in use remain effective.”

Reinfection Concerns

Experts caution that reinfection is still possible, even shortly after recovery or vaccination. While most reinfections tend to be mild, individuals can still transmit the virus to others.

Accessing Covid Testing and Vaccines

Though free Covid tests are less accessible, pharmacies continue to sell rapid tests. Additionally, Covid vaccines are available at various locations, including high street pharmacies and private clinics, with costs typically around £99 per dose.
