Motive Revealed in Danville Councilman Arson Attack
On July 30, 2025, Buck-Hayes reportedly set Councilman Vogler on fire outside his workplace, Showcase Magazine. According to Danville Police Sgt. Gerrit Clay, Buck-Hayes confessed that he acted out of revenge, claiming Vogler had an affair with his wife. Buck-Hayes allegedly purchased gasoline and then used a lighter to ignite the flames.
Details of the Incident
During the preliminary hearing, eyewitness Steven Seiple recounted the horrifying event. He saw Buck-Hayes chasing Vogler, who was ultimately burned. Seiple noted significant injuries: Vogler’s shirt was burned away, and he sustained extensive burns on his body.
Injuries Sustained by Councilman Vogler
- Second- and third-degree burns covering 60% of his body
- Sustained burn shock and septic shock
- Injuries caused extensive damage to his lungs from smoke inhalation
Vogler’s recovery involves multiple surgeries. As of now, he remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) burn unit after five operations.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Penalties
Michael Newman, the Commonwealth’s Attorney, emphasized the severity of the case. He explained that the charge of aggravated malicious wounding is serious due to the permanent nature of Vogler’s injuries, carrying a potential sentence of 20 years to life if Buck-Hayes is convicted.
The Grand Jury is expected to review the evidence on October 27, 2025. Buck-Hayes has also filed a motion for a competency evaluation for trial and sanity during the incident. However, this motion may require re-filing in circuit court.
As the case develops, it underscores the grave implications of personal vendettas and the serious consequences that arise from violent actions.
