Uber, Ola, Rapido Drivers to Strike Across India on February 7

On February 7, drivers affiliated with popular ride-hailing services Uber, Ola, and Rapido are set to protest nationwide. This strike, known as the “All India Breakdown,” aims to address ongoing issues faced by app-based transport workers in India. Organized by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) alongside other labor organizations, the protest will see drivers simultaneously deactivate their ride-hailing apps.
Reasons Behind the Strike
The primary reason for this strike stems from long-standing grievances highlighted by the TGPWU in a letter to the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. The letter emphasizes that:
- There is no government-mandated fare system for services provided by platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
- Fare determination is solely in the hands of companies, leading to income instability for drivers.
- These conditions have pushed many drivers into poverty while companies continue to profit.
Demands of the Drivers
The striking drivers have outlined specific demands to improve their working conditions:
- Immediate establishment of minimum base fares for app-based transport services, including taxis and autos.
- Consultation with recognized driver unions to finalize these fares, in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025.
- A ban on the use of private vehicles for commercial services or mandatory conversion of such vehicles to commercial status.
Impact on Commuters
Commuters should prepare for disruptions on February 7, as the intensity of the strike may vary across India. Passengers relying on Uber, Ola, and Rapido are encouraged to seek alternative transportation, particularly during the busy morning and evening hours. The extent of inconvenience will largely depend on regional participation in the strike.
This protest aims to call attention to the critical need for regulatory measures that safeguard the livelihoods of app-based transport workers. With millions affected by the current situation, the union urges immediate reform to prevent further economic fallout in this sector.
