Penguins’ Rust Receives Three-Game Suspension for Boeser Headshot

The Pittsburgh Penguins forward, Bryan Rust, has been handed a three-game suspension for an illegal check to the head. This ruling was made by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Tuesday, following an incident during a game against the Vancouver Canucks.

Incident Overview

The suspension stems from a late-game occurrence on Sunday. With just seconds left in the match and the Canucks trailing 3-2, Rust made contact with Vancouver winger Brock Boeser. As Rust skated through the slot, his extended elbow struck Boeser high, prompting immediate concern.

Player Injury and Consequences

Although the Canucks failed to score in that final stretch, Boeser managed to leave the ice under his own power, assisted by teammates and training staff. However, the Canucks announced the next day that Boeser was placed on injured reserve due to the effects of the hit.

Player Safety Hearing

The decision to suspend Rust was reached after a phone hearing with the NHL’s Player Safety Department. The suspension could have been as long as five games, but ultimately, it was set at three games.

Season Performance

  • Games played: 47
  • Goals: 18
  • Assists: 21

This incident marks the first suspension in Rust’s career. He will miss upcoming games against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, and the Ottawa Senators on Monday. Rust will be eligible to return to the lineup on Tuesday to face the New York Islanders.
