Einarson and Lawes Advance to 4-0 at Scotties Tournament of Hearts

The Scotties Tournament of Hearts has been a showcase of talent and competition. With the standings heating up, Manitoba stands out as the only unbeaten team in Pool B, boasting an impressive 4-0 record.

Einarson and Lawes Lead Pool A Teams at Scotties

On Monday, Beth Peterson led Team Manitoba to a commanding 9-2 victory over Krista Scharf from Northern Ontario. This win solidified their standing with a perfect record. Coach Jill Officer praised the team’s ability to execute crucial shots and support one another during matches. “When there’s maybe a miss, the next person comes along and makes a big one to bail them out,” she said.

Peterson has transitioned from skip to third, performing exceptionally with an 88 percent success rate in her shots. Kelsey Calvert, now skipping, achieved a remarkable 95 percent. The team’s composition includes players Melissa Gordon-Kurz and Katherine Remillard, who have maintained the name Team Peterson despite the shifts in roles.

Team Changes and Dynamic Performance

The decision to switch positions arose after a disappointing finish at the Canadian Pre-Trials. Peterson expressed that this change was a collective team decision, enhancing their comfort and effectiveness in their current roles.

  • Key Players:
    • Beth Peterson: Third, 88% shot success.
    • Kelsey Calvert: Skip, 95% shot success.
  • Team Members:
    • Melissa Gordon-Kurz
    • Katherine Remillard

In Pool A, Kerri Einarson and Kaitlyn Lawes both secured their 4-0 records following wins against Jolianne Fortin and Taylour Stevens, respectively, both by a score of 8-2. They were set to compete against each other later that evening.

Upcoming Challenges

Peterson noted the advantages of the timing of the provincial playdowns, which contributed significantly to their current momentum. Team Manitoba has outscored opponents 36-16 over their first four games. Meanwhile, the competition remains fierce as round-robin play continues.

This tournament is crucial for determining the team representing Canada at the World Women’s Curling Championship in March in Calgary. As the play progresses, expectations are high for teams like Manitoba, Einarson, and Lawes, all vying for the championship title.
