Richard and Tarnya Norse-Evans have been residents of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands for 19 years. Originally from north London, they moved in 2007 seeking a more nature-focused lifestyle and a better environment for their son, Joss. The couple invested in an old farmhouse, transforming it into a “volcanic vineyard accommodation” named Finca Malvasia. Despite the picturesque surroundings, they emphasize that life in Lanzarote is far from a perpetual holiday. “Work life still goes on regardless of the weather,” Richard remarked, highlighting the challenges of setting up a business abroad.

Establishing a business in Lanzarote involves navigating complex Spanish regulations and paperwork. Richard advised potential entrepreneurs to prepare for lengthy permit applications and to learn the local language for legal dealings. Lanzarote’s economy relies heavily on tourism, contributing nearly 80% to the local GDP and providing ample employment opportunities.
While Richard and Tarnya have found success in their hospitality venture, they still yearn for certain aspects of life in the UK. Richard stated, “When you live on a small island, you miss the diversity of art galleries, city visits, and varied dining experiences.” They also manage a creative production company for film and photography, fostering a connection to the arts.

Raising Joss in Lanzarote has been fulfilling. He attended a private bilingual school, allowing his parents to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Their workdays conclude by 3 PM, leaving afternoons free for family adventures like surfing or horseback riding.
Balancing Two Worlds
Richard and Tarnya live in a villa close to Finca Malvasia, enabling them to oversee their guests while managing their own family time. With their local residency and UK passports, they enjoy the flexibility of traveling without visa restrictions. Living in Lanzarote is cost-effective compared to the UK, and they benefit from affordable flights back to Britain.
“With a four-hour flight, we can experience the best of both worlds,” Richard concluded, reflecting on their journey and the satisfying balance they’ve achieved between life in Lanzarote and their ties to the UK.
