San Jose’s State of the City Address Scheduled for Super Bowl Weekend

San Jose will spotlight its achievements during Super Bowl weekend with Mayor Matt Mahan’s State of the City address on February 7. This strategic timing coincides with the media frenzy surrounding Super Bowl LX, held nearby.
Highlights of the Address
Mayor Mahan aims to discuss significant progress in San Jose, particularly in areas such as:
- Homelessness initiatives
- Public safety enhancements
- Strengthened relationships with key partners like Santa Clara County, the San Jose Sharks, and PG&E
Mahan remarked that these partnerships have evolved significantly since he took office. Notably, the San Jose Sharks extended their lease at the SAP Center for another 25 years. Moreover, PG&E and the city are collaborating on new data centers.
Community Engagement Activities
The event will also incorporate a service project. Volunteers are expected to participate in downtown improvement efforts, which may include:
- Renovating the former Greyhound bus station on Almaden Boulevard
- Enhancing trails at Guadalupe River Park
Following the morning projects, the Mayor will deliver his address at San Pedro Square during the San Pedro Superfest. Mahan believes this approach saves taxpayer money by making use of existing infrastructure.
Future Goals for San Jose
Mahan acknowledges the need for continued improvement in housing affordability. He referenced Baumol’s cost disease, noting the rising costs of construction that exceed market affordability. He wants to encourage pride among citizens regarding San Jose’s advancements compared to other California cities.
Weekend Activities in San Jose
The weekend will be bustling with literary events as well. The 13th annual LocalLit Author Fair will take place, featuring more than a dozen Bay Area writers. Attendees can meet authors like:

This event is scheduled for February 10 from 2 PM to 4:30 PM at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Main Library.

In addition, award-winning author Jordan Rosenfeld will conduct a workshop focused on voice and tone for the South Bay Writers Club on February 10. This event runs from 10 AM to 3 PM and costs $100, which includes lunch and a copy of Rosenfeld’s book, “The Sound of Story.”
Musical Concert
On February 9, music enthusiasts can enjoy a concert at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church featuring pianist Jon Nakamatsu and clarinetist Jon Manasse. The concert is donation-based, with a suggested amount of $30.
