Northwestern Ontario Temperatures Plunge This Week

A social services organization in Kenora has issued an urgent appeal for warm winter clothing as temperatures plunge across Northwestern Ontario. Cold weather warnings were established by Environment Canada on Monday morning, with most warnings lifted by afternoon, except for the areas of Dryden and Sioux Lookout. Despite the lifted warnings, extremely low temperatures are anticipated in the region.
Temperature Forecast Across Northwestern Ontario
In Thunder Bay, daytime temperatures are expected to reach between -16°C and -22°C in the coming days. Overnight temperatures may fall to approximately -30°C on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This trend is consistent across other areas such as:
- Dryden
- Sioux Lookout
- Atikokan
- Red Lake
- Kenora
All these locations are forecasting daytime highs below -20°C and overnight lows exceeding -30°C this week.
Community Response and Needs
The Kenora Fellowship Centre, led by director Yvonne Bearbull, operates a daily drop-in program offering donated winter wear to those in need. “We see a lot of people every day,” Bearbull remarked. “Many have had frostbite and are seeking warmer clothing.” The center remains open daily during this cold snap and is calling for donations via social media.
Bearbull stated, “We’ve received a wonderful response. Items are being donated as quickly as they are being distributed.” The center is currently in need of:
- Socks
- Footwear
- Coats
- Sweaters
- Pants
- Toques
- Mitts
- Neck warmers
Donations can be dropped off at the Kenora center located on Water Street. Bearbull noted the visible concern on the faces of donors who wish to support those in need, stating, “It’s heartwarming to see individuals leave better prepared than when they arrived.”
