DSA’s Christina Cover Considers Assembly Run in South Bronx

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are eyeing another Assembly seat in the South Bronx, with Christina Cover emerging as a notable candidate. A current public school teacher and former communications coordinator for Assembly Member Khaleel Anderson, Cover officially filed her candidacy for Assembly District 84, according to state campaign finance records.

Background on Christina Cover

Cover is associated with both the DSA and the Working Families Party (WFP). Her candidacy comes as the current Assembly Member, Amanda Septimo, shifts her focus to a congressional challenge against Rep. Ritchie Torres. Since Septimo cannot run for both positions, this opens the door for Cover in the state legislative race.

Key Issues and Goals

In a recent post on X, Cover indicated she is “strongly considering” the run. She aims to address significant issues such as improving literacy among students in the Bronx and advocating for affordable housing options.

Political Landscape

Assembly District 84 has a progressive representation, currently held by Amanda Septimo, who has been elected three times with support from the WFP. Unlike Septimo, Cover is a member of the DSA. This difference could impact the dynamics of the race.

  • Amanda Septimo: Current Assembly Member, running for Congress.
  • Christina Cover: Filed for Assembly District 84, focuses on education and housing.
  • Election Context: Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo won by 10 points; Mayor Zohran Mamdani won by 20 points.

Potential Endorsements

Sources within the DSA have mentioned that the group may endorse Cover, although they are also considering other candidates. A candidate forum is expected around January 28.

Ariana Collado, Executive Director of Bronx Dems, stated that they have not spoken with Cover or Gregory Blackmon, another candidate in the race. With a strong county organization like the Bronx Dems, competition in this district will be intense.
