GOP Senator Criticizes Stephen Miller’s Greenland Remarks as ‘Stupid’

Recent comments made by White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller have sparked significant backlash from GOP Senator Thom Tillis. Miller suggested that the United States consider taking control of Greenland, which Tillis condemned as “amateurish” and “absurd.” In a speech delivered in the Senate, the retiring North Carolina senator expressed his frustration with such remarks, calling for better guidance for the President.
Tillis Criticizes Miller’s Remarks on Greenland
During his address on the Senate floor, Tillis emphasized that he is “sick of stupid” comments from government officials. He believes that advice given to President Donald Trump should enhance his legacy, not detract from it. Tillis stated: “This nonsense on what’s going on with Greenland is a distraction from the good work he’s doing.”
Miller’s Statement on Greenland
On a recent episode of CNN’s “The Lead,” Miller argued that the formal position of the Trump administration supports the idea that “Greenland should be part of the United States.” He questioned Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory, stating: “What is the basis of their territorial claim?”
Tillis Defends NATO Alliances
Tillis, who leads the bipartisan Senate NATO Observer Group, criticized Miller’s ability to represent American government views. He firmly stated: “He doesn’t speak for the US government.” Tillis further explained that Miller’s comments overshadow important military operations, particularly in Venezuela.
“What makes me cranky is when people don’t do their homework,” he remarked, warning that such statements could tarnish the mission supported by the Trump administration.
Denmark’s Contribution to NATO
Tillis highlighted Denmark’s vital role in NATO, referencing its significant contributions since the September 11 attacks. He noted that Denmark lost 43 soldiers in Afghanistan despite having a national population of just 6 million. This contribution underscores the strength of the NATO alliance.
Bipartisan Concerns
Tillis’s comments followed a joint statement he made with Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Together, they called attention to the importance of respecting Denmark’s sovereignty regarding Greenland.
- Denmark and Greenland have clarified that Greenland is not for sale.
- Any U.S. suggestions to coerce a NATO ally undermine self-determination principles.
Tillis concluded that providing solid advice to the President is crucial for honoring the contributions of both Denmark and its commitment to NATO. He emphasized the need for the U.S. to uphold its treaty obligations and respect the territorial integrity of its allies.
