Dr. King Celebration Highlights Women in Movement with Historian Traci Parker
The city of Bloomington is set to host its Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration on January 19 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and is free for the public. This year’s theme, “Soul, Spirit & Sacrifice: Honoring the Legacy of Coretta Scott King and the Women Who Faced America to Save U.S.,” highlights the significant contributions of women in the civil rights movement.
Keynote Speaker Dr. Traci Parker
Dr. Traci Parker, a prominent historian and Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Davis, will deliver the keynote address. Dr. Parker specializes in African American history and the civil rights movement. She is also the co-editor of the upcoming “The New Civil Rights Movement Reader,” set to be published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2023.
In addition to her editorial work, Dr. Parker is currently compiling a biography of Coretta Scott King, drawing from rare archival materials.
Musical Performances
The celebration will feature musical performances from the Indiana University African American Choral Ensemble, led by Dr. Raymond Wise, and renowned opera singer Marietta Simpson. These performances are expected to enhance the commemorative atmosphere of the evening.
Legacy Award Presentation
During the event, the prestigious 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award will be conferred. This award honors individuals, businesses, or organizations whose efforts align with the values epitomized by Dr. King.
