US Faces Widespread Criticism Over Maduro Seizure

The recent US seizure of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro has triggered widespread criticism internationally, with various countries expressing deep concern about the implications of such actions. This controversy has stirred strong responses from multiple nations and highlighted the ongoing conflict over Venezuela’s political landscape.
International Reactions to US Seizure of Maduro
Diplomats from different countries participated in a United Nations meeting where they voiced their views on the US military operation. Strong condemnations came from several nations, alongside calls for adherence to international law.
European Concerns
- Denmark’s deputy UN ambassador, Sandra Jensen Landi, stated a “deep concern” regarding the situation, emphasizing the need for respect for the UN Charter.
- France echoed similar sentiments, condemning the violation of the Charter by permanent members of the Security Council.
Notably, both UK and Greek diplomats refrained from condemning the US actions. The UK ambassador, James Kariuki, called for a peaceful transition in Venezuela but fell short of a strong critique of the US operation.
Criticism from Latin America
- Panama’s ambassador, Eloy Alfaro de Alba, voiced apprehension about US strategies that exclude opposition forces, warning against the establishment of a regime led by figures from the “repressive apparatus.”
- Colombia’s ambassador, Leonor Zalabata Torres, labeled the unilateral use of force as a serious violation of international law.
Global Perspectives
Russia’s ambassador, Vassili Nebenzia, condemned the actions as “international banditry” while accusing the US of neo-colonialism. Similarly, Chinese Chargé d’Affaires, Sun Lei, described the US acts as “unilateral, illegal, and bullying.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated his “deep concern” over the lack of respect for international law and stressed the need for legal standards to prevail.
US Justifications
In defense of the operation, US UN Ambassador Mike Waltz labeled Maduro as an illegitimate leader involved in drug trafficking and terrorism. He emphasized the need to counteract adversaries controlling Venezuela, particularly given its significant energy reserves.
The incident reflects a complex geopolitical landscape, illustrating the contentious debates surrounding international intervention and the sovereignty of nations. The call for dialogue and respect for international law remains critical in responding to the evolving crisis in Venezuela.
